How to Update a Bathroom Without Remodeling: 6 Easy DIY Ideas

Today, the cost to renovate a bathroom is incredibly high. When I moved into my home, I knew gutting all three bathrooms right away wasn’t an option, but I also didn’t want to wait years for them to feel beautiful. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to refresh or modernize a bathroom without a full remodel.

Before we start, let’s take a moment and see how ugly the bathroom was when we started! I’m still amazed at the difference for such a small investment.

Here are six simple steps I used to update my builder grade bathroom without remodeling.

1. Add Chair Rail

Chair rail molding is an inexpensive way to bring instant character and dimension to plain walls. If your bathroom doesn’t have tile, this is an easy update to try. Bonus: chair rail creates the perfect natural divider for wallpaper or paint.

2. Try Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

Yes, you can use peel-and-stick wallpaper in a bathroom! It’s one of the easiest ways to add big impact without the commitment. I recommend using a wallpaper tool kit like this one from Amazon. it comes with a squeegee and brush for smoothing bubbles, a utility knife for sharp cuts, and a ruler for precise measuring. A good level also helps keep everything straight.

3. Replace Mirrors

Swapping out a mirror instantly changes the vibe of a bathroom. I chose warm, dark wood-framed mirrors to add texture and coziness. If you have a large builder-grade mirror glued to the wall like I did, don’t worry—a hair dryer and some patience will loosen the adhesive. The difference is dramatic and makes the space feel custom.

4. Update the Light Fixtures

Lighting sets the tone for the whole room. If you’re on a budget, choose fixtures similar in size to your current ones to avoid rewiring or moving electrical. I replaced my old home depot sconces with this modern shaded style, and they completely elevated the room. The fabric on the shades add an element of texture to the walls that looks expensive but isn’t.

5. Swap Out Hardware

This might be the easiest and most affordable change of all. I found this vintage inspired bathroom hardware set on Amazon for around $50 total. Replacing my towel bars, toilet paper holder, and hooks gave the bathroom an instant upgrade. It felt amazing to toss the builder-grade pieces in the trash.

6. Add Artwork or Personal Touches

Don’t forget the fun details! Hanging artwork or adding a personal element makes the room feel finished. In our case, I framed a playful photo of our dog in my daughter’s bathrobe. Now, every time I walk into the room it’s impossible not to smile.

These updates cost a fraction of a full remodel but made my bathroom feel brand new.
